The REAL ID Deadline Is Coming—Here’s What You Need to Know Before You Fly
If you’re planning to fly within the U.S. in the near future, there’s a major travel change you need to have on your radar: the REAL ID deadline. It’s been pushed back a few times, but this time—it’s really happening.
Let’s break down what REAL ID is, what’s changing, and what you need to do now to avoid travel headaches later.
So, What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a form of identification that meets stricter federal security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards. You can recognize it by the gold star in the top right corner of your license or ID.
Starting May 7, 2025, if you're 18 or older and flying domestically, you'll need a REAL ID-compliant license (or another acceptable form of ID) to get through airport security.
Why Is This Happening?
The REAL ID Act was passed after 9/11 to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued IDs and make it harder for fraudulent documents to be used at airports, military bases, and federal facilities.
It's about making domestic air travel more secure—but it also means you’ll need to double-check your ID before your next trip.
What Happens If You Don’t Have One?
If you show up at the airport after May 7, 2025, with a non-compliant driver’s license, you won’t be allowed through TSA security—unless you have an alternative form of acceptable ID, such as:
A valid U.S. passport or passport card
A DHS Trusted Traveler card (like Global Entry)
A U.S. military ID
Permanent Resident Card
So yes—you can still fly without a REAL ID, but only if you have one of those other documents with you.
How Do You Get a REAL ID?
You’ll need to visit your local DMV or licensing office in person. Requirements vary slightly by state, but generally you’ll need:
Proof of identity (like a birth certificate or passport)
Social Security number
Two documents proving state residency (like utility bills or lease agreements)
Your current driver’s license
Heads up: You cannot get a REAL ID online. You must go in person with your documents.
