What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise
Must-Have Products for Smooth Sailing
Planning a Caribbean cruise is exciting—sunny skies, turquoise waters, and island-hopping adventures await! But once the cruise is booked, the excursions are picked, and the countdown is on, the big question remains: What should I pack?
Packing for a cruise is a little different from a land-based vacation. You’ll need outfits for beach days and dinners at sea, essentials for excursions, and a few items you may not have thought about until it’s too late. As a travel advisor (and frequent cruiser), I’ve rounded up my top product recommendations to help you cruise smart and stress-free.
1. Packing Cubes for Organization
Whether you’re packing for one or for two, space in a cruise cabin is limited. Packing cubes are a game-changer. Not only do they keep everything neat and easy to find, but they also make unpacking a breeze—you can just transfer them directly into the drawers.
Recommended: Compression cubes for maximizing suitcase space.
2. Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Most Caribbean destinations require sunscreen to be reef-safe to protect marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain chemicals like oxybenzone that harm coral reefs. A mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreen is better for your skin and the environment—and some ports will only allow it.
Tip: Look for SPF 30+ with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
3. Magnetic Hooks
This one surprises a lot of first-time cruisers: cruise cabin walls are metal! Magnetic hooks are an easy way to add storage and keep hats, lanyards, swimsuits, or lightweight bags off the floor and organized.
Pro tip: Bring 4–6 heavy-duty hooks for maximum flexibility.
4. Motion Sickness Remedies
Even on the calmest seas, it’s best to be prepared. Pack motion sickness bands, ginger chews, or non-drowsy Dramamine—just in case. It’s better to have it and not need it than the other way around.
Bonus: Sea-Bands are drug-free and reusable.
5. Waterproof Phone Pouch
You’ll want your phone for pictures during excursions, but sand and saltwater don’t mix well with electronics. A waterproof phone pouch lets you take photos from the beach or boat without worry—and many let you use the touchscreen underwater!
Ideal for: Snorkeling, kayaking, or just lounging near the waves.
6. Day Bag or Backpack
A lightweight backpack or crossbody bag is essential for shore excursions. Use it to carry sunscreen, water, your cruise card, a towel, and souvenirs.
Packing tip: Choose one that folds flat into your suitcase when not in use.
7. Refillable Water Bottle
Cruise ships have water refill stations, and staying hydrated in the Caribbean heat is a must. Bring a refillable, insulated water bottle to keep your drinks cold all day.
Bonus: Many ports don’t offer free water, so having your own is a money-saver too.
8. Power Strip (Cruise-Approved)
Most cruise cabins have limited outlets—usually one or two—which isn’t ideal when you’ve got phones, smartwatches, tablets, and curling irons to plug in. Look for a non-surge-protected, cruise-approved power strip or charging hub.
Important: Surge protectors are banned on most ships and will be confiscated.
9. Cruise Lanyard or Card Holder
Your cruise card is your key to everything—your room, your onboard purchases, even getting on and off the ship. A lanyard or waterproof card holder helps you keep it handy (and less likely to get lost).
Style tip: Pick a fun one that matches your travel vibe!
10. Dressy Outfit for Dinner or Formal Night
Most Caribbean cruises include at least one formal or “elegant” night. Even if you keep things casual the rest of the time, you’ll want one outfit that’s a bit more polished—think sundress and sandals, or a collared shirt and slacks.
Don’t forget: Some specialty restaurants have dress codes!
Bonus Items to Consider
Swim cover-up: Perfect for breakfast before beach days or poolside lounging.
Snorkel gear: If you prefer your own instead of using shared rentals.
Towel bands: Keep your towel in place on windy deck days.
Aloe vera gel: For the sunburn you didn’t plan on getting.
Lightweight rain jacket or poncho: Caribbean showers can pop up fast.

Packing smart can make a huge difference in your cruise experience—from staying organized in your cabin to being prepared for anything on shore. While cruise lines offer lots of conveniences onboard, having the right gear from home ensures your trip is easy, fun, and worry-free.
